Sri Lanka may be small, but it punches far above its weight. In just 10 days you can climb an ancient rock fortress, spot leopards on safari, tour tea plantations, and lounge on palm-fringed beaches — all while eating some of the best food in Asia.
Days 1-3: Cultural Triangle
Sigiriya: The 200-meter Lion Rock fortress rising from the jungle is Sri Lanka's most iconic sight. Climb the 1,200 steps at dawn for the best light and fewer crowds. Dambulla Cave Temple: Five caves containing 150 Buddha statues and vibrant murals. Polonnaruwa: The medieval capital with remarkably preserved ruins — rent a bicycle to explore.
Days 4-5: Kandy & Tea Country
Kandy's Temple of the Tooth houses Buddhism's most sacred relic. The hill country around Nuwara Eliya is carpeted in tea — tour a working plantation, taste the world's finest Ceylon tea, and ride the famous blue train through misty hills from Kandy to Ella (one of the world's most scenic rail journeys).
Days 6-10: Safari & Beach
Yala National Park has one of the highest leopard densities on Earth. After the wildlife, head to the south coast — Mirissa for whale watching (blue whales!), Unawatuna for swimming, and Galle Fort for sunset walks along 17th-century Dutch ramparts. End your trip with a seafood feast at a beach shack.
