The Annapurna Circuit is often called the best long-distance trek in the world. Over 160-230km, you cross the 5,416m Thorong La Pass, traverse diverse landscapes from subtropical forest to high-altitude desert, and immerse yourself in Gurung, Manangi, and Thakali cultures.
Best Season
October–November: Crystal-clear skies, comfortable daytime temperatures, and the best mountain views. This is peak season — teahouses fill up, so book ahead. March–April: Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and warmer temperatures. Slightly hazier views but fewer crowds.
The Route (Standard 14-16 Days)
The classic route starts in Besisahar and ends in Nayapul (near Pokhara). Key stops: Jagat (1,300m), Dharapani (1,860m), Chame (2,670m), Pisang (3,200m), Manang (3,540m — acclimatization day essential), Thorong Phedi/High Camp (4,450-4,850m), Thorong La Pass (5,416m — start by 4am), Muktinath (3,800m — sacred temple), Jomsom, Tatopani (hot springs!), and Ghorepani (Poon Hill sunrise).
Teahouse Life
You'll sleep in simple family-run lodges with basic rooms, communal dining halls heated by a central stove, and menus featuring dhal bhat (lentils and rice — unlimited refills!), momos, and fried noodles. Most teahouses now have WiFi and hot showers (usually for a small fee).
What to Pack
- Four-season sleeping bag (teahouses provide blankets but they're thin)
- Layers: thermal base, fleece mid, down jacket, waterproof shell
- Trekking poles (knees will thank you on the descent)
- Water purification tablets
- Snacks (Snickers bars are excellent trekking fuel)
