The Chinese saying goes: "Guilin's scenery is the best under heaven." Those iconic limestone karst peaks rising from misty rivers have appeared on Chinese scroll paintings for over a thousand years — and they're even more beautiful in person.

The Li River Cruise

The 83km cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the quintessential experience. Over 4-5 hours, you'll pass bamboo groves, water buffalo, cormorant fishermen, and the famous scenery printed on the 20 RMB note. Book a morning departure for the best light and fewer tour groups.

Yangshuo: The Real Star

While most visitors rush through on day trips, Yangshuo rewards those who stay. Rent a bicycle and ride through rice paddies framed by karst peaks. Take a bamboo raft on the Yulong River (quieter and more intimate than the Li River). Hike up Xianggong Hill at sunrise for the panoramic view that defines southern China.

Longji Rice Terraces

About 2.5 hours from Guilin, the Dragon's Backbone terraces climb 800 meters up the mountainside. Visit in May-June when the flooded paddies mirror the sky, or September-October when the rice turns golden. Stay overnight in Ping'an or Dazhai village to catch sunrise.

Local Flavors

Guilin rice noodles (mifen) are the breakfast of champions — topped with pickled beans, peanuts, and braised pork. Beer fish (pi jiu yu) is Yangshuo's signature dish, cooked with local漓泉 beer and fresh river fish.
