All foreign travelers to Tibet need a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), also known as the Tibet Entry Permit. This is in addition to your Chinese visa. The process can seem confusing, but when you book with a registered tour operator — like Asia Wonder Tours — we handle everything. Here's exactly what you need to know.
Who Needs a Tibet Travel Permit?
Every foreign passport holder (except Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan residents with special permits) needs a TTP. This includes: individual travelers, group tours, and even travelers just transiting through Tibet. Citizens of countries with diplomatic tensions may face additional restrictions — your tour operator will advise.
The Application Process (We Handle This)
Step 1: Book a tour with a registered Tibet tour operator (like Asia Wonder Tours). Independent travel in Tibet is not permitted — you must join an organized tour. Step 2: Send us your passport copy and Chinese visa. Your passport must be valid for 6+ months. Step 3: We submit your application to the Tibet Tourism Bureau, which takes 8-10 working days. Your TTP is a paper document we receive on your behalf in Lhasa. Step 4: We provide the permit to your guide, who will show it at checkpoints. You can't take the train or fly into Tibet without it.
Critical Tips
Apply 20+ days before travel — 8-10 days processing, plus time for your Chinese visa, plus buffer for issues. Your Chinese visa must be issued first before we can apply for the TTP. The TTP covers Lhasa and nearby areas only. Additional permits are needed for Everest Base Camp, Mount Kailash, and other restricted areas — we handle these too, but they require more processing time. Journalists and government officials on certain passports may face additional scrutiny.
New for 2025-2026
Since 2025, Tibet Travel Permits are being issued more efficiently for tourists from friendly nations. Several new areas previously closed to foreigners have opened. However, regulations can change with little notice — always confirm the latest requirements with your tour operator.
